In case you haven't already figured this out, this is a role playing journal, intended and specifically used for RPGs within livejournal. Unless cartoon characters are suddenly corporeal entities capable of existence in "the real world" (and, frankly, that would be a terrific plot for a new horror movie; someone should get on that immediately), you can be assured I am not actually Leela, neither am I any member of the creative staff responsible for bringing about her existence. I am just a fan of the show and of sci fi in general. You want to know more about me? My personal journal, including a list of my interests, can be found here.

About Leela
Turanga Leela (as in many Asian cultures, "Turanga" is her family name, which formally precedes her given name, but friends mostly just call her "Leela") was born around 2975 A.D., and though she never specifies her actual age, is somewhere in her late twenties/early thirties. Leela's story begins early in the year 3000 A.D., after the Earth is governed under one ruler, the preserved head of Richard Nixon, in New New York (Old New York having long since fallen to the march of time, in much the same fashion as many ancient Roman buildings and streets).

Leela grew up in the Cookieville Minimum Security Orphanarium, being deposited there as a newborn with a note, supposedly written in an unknown alien dialect, pinned to her blanket. The note simply read, "Your parents love you very much." She spent much of her life believing she was of unknown alien origin, estranged from the rest of her people: The only "cyclopean" alien on Earth. This led to many strong feelings of abandonment, loneliness, social awkwardness, and a strong sense of jealousy that are prevalent in her day to day life. However, not too long ago Leela discovered that she is not actually of alien origins at all, but rather of a species of sewer mutants living under the streets of New New York. Wishing for their daughter to live a normal life outside the sewers upon seeing that she was "the least mutated mutant ever born," her parents, Turanga Morris (father), and Turanga Munda (mother), forged the "alien note" and left her to be raised in the Orphanarium. However, all throughout Leela's life they watched over her from the shadows as true parents would, protecting her from certain dangers and leaving mysterious presents when she wasn't looking. Leela eventually found out the truth about her parents, and is quite happily reunited with them, visiting their home in the sewer often, and once even going through the trouble of getting day passes so they could come visit her world.

Leela works for the Planet Express Delivery Company with several other human characters and one Lobster-like alien, Dr. Zoidberg, the unschooled and sometimes incompetent company doctor. The proprietor of Planet Express is the elderly Professor Hubert Farnsworth, and he often sends his delivery crew off on dangerous, ridiculous, suicidal missions throughout the universe. Leela captains and flies the Planet Express delivery ship to their various destinations, asserting herself as the responsible, strong leader of the crew. She's accompanied by delivery boy Philip J. Fry (just called "Fry"), a thirty-something earthman from the 21st century who had been cryogenically frozen (quite by accident) and reunited with his great-great-great-great-great-great nephew, Professor Farnsworth (who's nearing 160 at this time). Fry also happens to be deeply in love with Leela, who doesn't return his sentiments because she sees him as being too immature, without direction in his life, and a lazy slob, though he does manage occasions of maturity and thoughtfulness every so often. Other crew members include a rude, arrogant, smoking and drinking, thug of a robot named Bender, Planet Express' Jamaican accountant Hermes, heiress Amy Wong, whose rich parents fund Planet express, and Cubert Farnsworth, the bratty little teenage super-genius DNA clone of Professor Farnsworth.

Leela was also at one point part of a superhero threesome, when she used some super-powerful sports cream and developed... well, super powers. Her superhero name was Clobberella. The other two-thirds of the crime-fighting trio were Fry and Bender.

Leela is drawn to success and self-confidence, and thus has a long list of short-lived past romances (including a fling with Captain James T. Kirk). She was once married to Fry for a short time, but they are now divorced. It's universally believed, however, that Fry is her dream man, she just doesn't realize it yet. Leela tends to be jealous of Amy, who is both rich and beautiful and always has a string of men chasing after her. She's prone to moments of loneliness and is afraid of failure. She's deeply compassionate, is an animal rights activist, and owns a small alien pet named Nibbler, whom she adores. She takes politics very seriously and often associates herself with various causes, such as the environment, animal rights, woman's liberation, and so forth. She's greatly recognized as being fairly intelligent, a natural leader, assertive, devoted, and though a skilled warrior she usually wears her heart on her sleeve.

When RPing with Leela you can expect her to be considerate unless she thinks you're an idiot. She tends to be sarcastic, even sardonic, quick-witted and temperamental. Her mood is easily swayed by the people she's with. With the self-assured and coy she is flirtatious; with the bumbling and moronic she is short-tempered and only grudgingly patient, as a common courtesy; with the arrogant and pompous she's sarcastic, but often times jealous of their seeming successes. Get alcohol in her and she'll probably be a little more introverted and self-conscious, more readily aware of her loneliness and failures, or (but for the nonviolence rule) a bit of a brawler. She also loves dancing and having a good time, so putting her in a bar is going to be fun regardless of what persona she takes on.

Time-line notes
Leela is being played post-series, pre-movies, with the possibility of working in the movies after they've all been released. This places her somewhere around 3004 A.D. and somewhere in her early thirties. The series ends on a somewhat tentative note, leaving Fry and Leela's relationship burgeoning but unsettled. The general opinion is they are still simply friends, but the possibilities for romance are becoming more and more likely.

This entry has been back-dated so it will always show up on top. However, for OOM (Out Of [livejournal.com profile] milliways_bar) posts and an idea of how Leela acts (and how I write), scroll down for some example stories.
